Hazardous Properties and Safety Assessment

To serve the purposes of our customers, we conduct studies using the most suitable test guidelines at our laboratories and / or our friend laboratories in and outside of Japan. We conduct tests for hazardous properties and safety other than those below, provide information about them, and conduct a consultation. First, please tell us your purpose (screening in the development phase, application to a government agency, self-imposed regulation, your customer's demand, MSDS authoring, hazard assessment of your product, etc., or budget, period...).

Trend in tests for hazardous properties and safety

Animal tests for hazardous properties and safety are shifting to tests on the principle of the three R's ("Replacement" to use no animals; "Reduction" to use fewer animals; and "Refinement" to inflict no pain on animals) for animal protection mainly in the EU and US. The OECD test guidelines that set internationally accepted studies of chemical substances were amended or eliminated on those principles. As a world trend toward studies for hazardous properties and safety, the principle of the three R's takes precedence over sensitivity and precision. Concerning safety standards, an advisory called the "Globally Harmonized System for Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS)" was issued by the United Nations (purple book). Many countries started moving toward establishment of laws and regulations according to the advisory by the year 2008. The GHS is to unify internationally different measures for physical hazards and toxicities. It aims at ensuring the safety of workers and consumers and international standardization of hazard communication, which is very important to those concerned, using standardized labels and MSDS documents. GHS hazards are classified as follows.

Health hazards

  • Acute toxicities [oral, dermal and inhalation]
  • Skin irritation / corrosion
  • Eye irritation / corrosion
  • Skin sensitization
  • Germ cell mutagenicity
  • Carcinogenicity
  • Reproductive toxicity
  • Specific target organ / System toxicity
  • Aspiration / respiratory hazards

Environmental hazards

  • Aquatic toxicity
